About Graf Research

The Graf Research Corporation was founded in 2015 by Jonathan Graf to be a new kind of defense research and development organization.  Our foundational core competency is defense-grade microelectronics security, including trustworthy computing, anti-tamper, and cyber-physical systems security.  From there, we have expanded into terrestrial and space microelectronics design and verification, signal processing, novel sensors, and electronic design automation software.

In any field in which we work, the backbone of our work is the primacy of the idea as a catalyst for disruptive technologies.  The idea begins its life as a concept on a whiteboard, where it is fragile and easy to dismiss.  Our dynamic team culture thrives on mentoring and building those ideas up from their risky first steps, then refining them through rigorous experimentation and sound science.  The ideas that survive are developed into prototypes, then commercialized into appropriate markets.

Our talented staff has a proven track record of transforming ideas from the whiteboard to the tip of the spear.  To attract and retain the best-of-the-best idea generators, we share both revenue and profit with every employee commensurate to performance at position.  By employing this fundamentally fair compensation structure, we ensure that employees are rewarded for high performance.  We hold as a core value that this fairness permits employees to concentrate on producing, nurturing, testing, and unleashing innovative ideas.

The Team

More important than any individual is our team.  We work in creative environments and contribute expertise to each other and to our customers.  Every technical staff member either holds or is completing an MS or PhD in engineering, science, or mathematics.  Unconventional thinking and unique people are the norm here.  If you would like to join us, click here.  The bios of a few of our team members are below.

Jonathan Graf - Square.jpg

Jonathan Graf, CEO

Jonathan has dedicated his career to developing technology for the US Department of Defense.  His research helped solve FPGA security and trust challenges on the DARPA Trust and IRIS programs (summary paper), Jonathan has also directly served DoD missions needs with novel technology solutions.  He has led more than 20 DoD SBIR projects and two large research BAAs as both Principal Investigator and Project Manager.  He holds patents in fields as broad as tamper-resistant secure processor architectures and FPGA-based reconfigurable computing.  As the Director of Technology for the Secure Computing division of Luna Innovations, he co-led that division through an acquisition by MacAulay-Brown, resulting in the transfer of an arsenal of DoD SBIR- and research-BAA-developed technologies into active daily use on defense programs.  Jonathan maintains strong ties within the university research, DoD, and Silicon Valley communities.  Jonathan has experience building teams not only from among diverse defense contractors but also by making connections between government entities whose missions are in alignment.  Jonathan's dedication to the joy and business of technology creation and deployment is the driving energy behind the Graf Research focus on unleashing innovation.  Jonathan holds BS and MS degrees in Computer Engineering from Virginia Tech.
